And Journal Issue 2

2010 / Brief

A Second Issue of And Journal with more contributors more content and more emphasis on design writing.

Concept

To introduce students from their first year of university to a journal that was less focused on the final product, and more on the journey and cultural considerations of design. The theme for this issue is "Thought Before Form".

Along side the printed journal we also redesigned a new website where debates can continue and feed in to future issues.

AND Journal

2010 / Brief

Create a platform for students to understand the importance and engage in the process of, critical design thinking and writing.

Concept

Calling the Journal AND was influenced by the belief that graphic design is more than just design. AND seemed to tie design to multiple fields (Graphic design AND critical thinking). The logo has been designed to fit many contexts and remain easily recognisable across all platforms.

Each issue, is written around a theme, causing a wide variety of views, opinions and sources to come together. The theme for this issue being "Design to Challenge" gives it a flexible nature and an open platform for debate. The theme is determined by the culture surrounding design, this issue was fuelled by the increasing emphasis on "eco design" and the political state of the country.

Contemporary Crafts Catalogue

2010 / Brief

Design a catalogue to highlight the work of graduates from Contemporary Crafts BA(hons) degree course, to be used as promotional material.

Concept

Simple editorial piece highlighting the work and profiles of each person featured in the catalogue. The cover theme is based upon the idea of leaving an impression.

This lead me to the technique of very simply debossing the title of the course, giving it the handcrafted aesthetic the group requested.

Layout

The layout is again simple and draws attentions to the work with image placement consistently on the right.

Design Museum

2010 / Brief

Re-brand the Design Museum taking into consideration its future move to the common wealth institute.

Concept

Focusing on the idea of details and the design museum offering an experience that encourages the audiences to look closer at everything because everything is designed. The concept is based upon a system of cropping and macro shots starting with the Design Museum logo itself and then other photographed objects alongside the slogan 'LOOK CLOSER'.

Stokes Of London

2010 / Brief

Name and brand a London based professional piano tuning and restoration company.

The client wanted to be perceived as well established, classical, attractive to a high end demographic and professional.

Concept

In keeping with London based companies and their heritage I chose to name the company after its owner and make it clear that it is london based. Stokes of London also gave way to using the "S" as an ornate and sophisticated mark to represent the company.

The brand mark is influenced by the ornate nature of the branding found on pianos and a treble clef used within sheet music. The mark can be used alone or cropped and has 3 colour ways that depict luxury and distinguish it within a very niche market.
